At the studios of Riviera Decor, we are truly blessed to live in a coastal area. Which means we leave our outdoor cushions out all year long! We can get a wide variety of temperatures though. One year, we received seven inches of snow but for the winter days when it is eighty- degrees, we want to be outside or pool side.
Begin with, buying quality outdoor fabric and remember, not all outdoor fabric is created equal. For more detail on selcting the right fabric for outdoor cushions read here: https://rivieradecorinc.com/2017/08/01/outdoor-fabric-dont-be-fooled/
The big-box store outdoor fabric will not stand up to the test of time. Invest in good fabric and our favorite is Sunbrella which we will use for illustrative purposes here. For a complete listing of all Sunbrella fabrics and their care follow this link from their Website and download the PDF: https://www.sunbrella.com/en-us/how-to-clean. Our only recommendation is to always test on a sample area first before applying to the actual product.
General Or Light Cleaning
To clean Sunbrella fabrics while still on a cushion, follow these simple steps:
- Brush off loose dirt.
- Hose down.
- Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid.
- Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
- Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
- Rinse until all soap residue is removed.
- Air dry.
- May not require re-treatment depending on the age of the fabric.
If stubborn stains persist, you can use a diluted bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning of mildew. For roof run-off or other similar stains a strong use a degreaser.
Heavy Duty Cleaning For Stubborn Stains And Mildew
Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean stubborn stains:
- Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and one fourth cup mild soap per gallon of clean water.
- Allow mixture to soak into fabric for up to 15 minutes.
- Blot stain with a sponge or clean towel. Note: Avoid this step when cleaning the coated side (Back side) of Sunbrella SeaMark, Plus, Supreme, or Clarity.
- Rinse until all soap residue is removed.
- Air dry.

Helpful hint in the event you need to wash the entire cushion cover
How to reinsert the foam into the cushion cover
In the event, you have had to completely remove the cushion cover, follow these helpful hints.
If you have a well made cushion cover and foam that is adequate, you should have a difficult time reinserting the foam, It can be quite a struggle. Cover the foam with plastic and vacuum out all the air. The foam will now be at a minimal size and easy to reinsert into the cushion cover.
A word of caution here…Remove any and all plastic that remains around the foam. The reason being is you do not want any thing interfering with the drainage of water from your foam or you will have mold and mildew issues.
Retreating Sunbrella Fabrics
Applying a retreatment:
Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a proprietary water and stain repellent finish that is designed to last for several years, but may require replenishing after a thorough cleaning. Glen Raven® recommends 303® Fabric Guard™, available in the United States, and Tex’Aktiv, available internationally.
- Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods.
- Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
- Apply retreatment in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.
